In psychology, term coined by Freud for the
unconscious antagonism of a son to his
father, whom he sees as a rival for his
mother's affection. For a girl antagonistic
to her mother for the same reason, the term
is Electra complex. Freud saw this as a
universal part of childhood development,
which in most children is resolved during
late childhood. Contemporary theory places
less importance on the Oedipus complex than
did Freud and his followers.
